Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Episode 4: "There are Miracles and Magic"

Madoka cries at breakfast.

Woot!
We're back!!
You didn't think we'd quit after only three posts?!
(yeah it's likely but WHATEVER we're still here)
Happy new year by the way.

Madoka and Sayaka don't want to be Magical Girls anymore.

~story~

Sayaka goes through some serious development here in this episode. We learn of her love for this mystery boy (Kojiro or Kojimi or something like that - not too important as of now) and that she is willing to do anything to save his hand to play the violin (such as risk her life being a magical girl - which she does become in this episode). Sayaka as a magical girl is even more super awesome than just plain old normal Sayaka. This episode also introduces us to Kyoko (another magical girl) who is super jealous of Sayaka and this episode truly introduces that there is much competition in the world of magical girls. Homura is very pleased with Madoka's decision to not become a magical girl and Homura seems to have taken a really strong liking with Madoka now (maybe because she truly cares about Madoka's safety? or maybe because that means less competition...)

Madoka cries in Mami's apartment.

~art~

The witch fight still had those creepy figures but the art style was in a more sloppily-drawn matter. However, it wasn't very distracting and actually fit in nice with the scene. There was no clear with in this episode but that's really not important. Sayaka's costume looks pretty awesome (not as great as Mami's was but whatever). The only downside is that there is a cape (which looks flashy but we all know that capes tend to get caught in things that result in the character's death - foreshadowing perhaps??)

Sayaka visits Kamijou in the hospital.

~sound~

The opening song is still the nice opening (that sounds WAY too peppy for a series as dark as Madoka has become). The OST still sounds really good - except the nice happy "life is good songs" that were played in the first two episodes are rarely played now. The songs now have a more serious and darker tone. The ending theme is still terrible and probably will never get better unless a new song is chosen to the end the show.

Hitomi under the influence of the Witch's Kiss.

~character~

Madoka is becoming more and more of a crybaby as the episodes go on. She was literally in tears for more than half the episode. Sayaka showed her weaknesses by giving in and becoming a magical girl to make a wish to save her friend (who treated her pretty crappily during the episode). If I was Sayaka and Kojimi treated me like he treated her I wouldn't even think twice about going out of my way to save his precious little fingers. I'd make my wish that his fingers would fall off so he would have no hope to play his violin ever again. Kyoko (the new girl) has this obvious hatred towards Sayaka which will probably be the plot of the next episode. Kyuube is still the sketchy little character that he has always been. Homura has shown that she really isn't the bad guy - she was always trying to prevent the girls from the fate that befalls the magical girls. However, this makes Mami seem more of a sketchy character since she was trying to convince them to sign the contracts with Kyuube. However, Mami probably didn't fully realize that death was certainly possible because she didn't witness the traumatic things that Homura had.

Sayaka as a Magical Girl.

~overall~

This episode receives an A. It had some great development and really seemed to move along nicely. Can't wait for next episode.
